May Cuts

Published on May 16, 2026, 13:02

This year I pruned the Skimmia and Pyracantha a little late, 2nd week of May, which was well after the blooms had finished and fallen. It was the dryest April on record almost no rain and the coldest start of May (see 16th chart below). Anyhow lets see if the pruning brings sprouts and flowers for next season.

Nettle compost was started, should be ready June 1st!

Rust spots on raspberries treated with soap/oil and trimming out.

Strawberries have straw and look strongest ever.

The Hostas treated with garlic spray and a few blue grains to stop the slugs/snails eating the lot - where are the hedgehogs? This is partially working but still two plants are lost and many with holes.

The pruned large apple tree looks better, the canker that was treated with copper seems to have dried, the resulting healthy leaves and strong new growth looks great.
